- to activate some key vocabulary;

- to present and practice the use of Present Perfect Continuous.

Equipment: textbooks, a tape recorder, handouts.

The Course of the Lesson

I. The Beginning of the Lesson.

1. Organizing the class for the lesson.

T.: Good morning, pupils! I am glad to see you!

P.: Good morning, teacher! We are glad to see you too!

T.: Take your seats! Today we will learn the Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

2. Warm-up activities.

T.: At the beginning of our lesson let’s read the poem and try not to be like that boy.

I Got Up In The Morning
I got up in the morning.
I tried to find my shoes,
My trousers, my coat,
My warm brown boots.
I couldn’t find a single thing.
But heard a bird who said,
“Put all the things in their place
Before you go to bed”.

II. The Main Body of the Lesson.

3. Homework check-up.

T.: Your homework for today was to speak about your house holding duties. Do you help your parents about the house? What do you do? How often do you do chores?

4. Presenting new material.

T.: The theme of our lesson is the Present Perfect Continuous Tense. It is used:

· for actions which started in the past and continue up to the present;

· for continuous actions which have visible results or effect in the present;

· to put emphasis on duration.

We form the Present Perfect Continuous Tense with have/has been + -ing form of the verb.

+ I have been waiting.

-We have not been waiting.

? Has he been waiting?

With the Present Perfect Continuous Tense you can use time expressions: for, since, all morning / day / week / month / year, how long.

5. Practising new material.

T.: Now look at the blackboard. There you can see the names of some pupils. They are late for school. Your task is to find out why they are late. What have they been doing?

Nancy the birds in the trees.

Susan the butterflies in the garden.

Jane has been watching the bees. They’re getting nectar from the flowers.

Dan the fish in the pool.

Pete the little waves in the sea.

Now, open your books and copy-books. Your task is to make sentences using the Present Perfect Continuous as in the example. (Ex. 2 p. 55 “English 7” O. Karpiuk).

1) Jane went to the market two hours ago. She hasn’t come back yet.

2) Granny started cooking three hours ago. She hasn’t finished yet.

3) I started washing-up twenty minutes ago. I haven’t finished yet.

4) The children started tidying their room an hour ago.

5) Grandpa went to work in the garden at 8 o’clock in the morning. He hasn’t come home yet.

Example: Max began building his house 3 months ago. He hasn’t finished it yet.

Max has been building his house for 3 months.

Let’s work in pairs, ask and answer questions using the clues as in the example. (Ex. 3 p. 55 “English 7” O. Karpiuk).

1) Jenny / walk the dog / two hours

2) Ron / warm up food in the microwave oven / three minutes

3) The children / plant trees / all day

4) Father / fix the iron / all morning

5) Nelly / make the salad / ten minutes

6) The girls / baby-sit / since afternoon

Example: Peter / cook pizza / half an hour

– How long has Peter been cooking pizza?

– He has been cooking pizza for half an hour.

6. Checking up the students’ comprehension of the lesson.

T.: Now, we are going to play the game “Guess what I’ve been doing!”(This game may be played in groups of three or four. Copy and cut up one set of cards for each group. Place them face down in the middle of the group. The first player takes one card, but mustn’t show it to the rest of group. He/ she should imagine they are the person depicted on the card and describe their appearance to the rest of the group, for example, I’m crying. The rest of the group must guess what activity the first player has been engaged in, for example, You’ve been quarreling. You’ve been watching a sad film. You’ve been peeling onions. The player who guesses correctly is allowed to keep the card. The object of the game is to collect the most cards.)

III. The End of the Lesson.

7. Homework setting.
